Amazon Buy Box Explained: What It Is and Why It Decides Everything

The Buy Box is the most important mechanism on Amazon. 82–90% of sales flow through it. We explain the 7 criteria, rotation and how a repricer helps.

Amazon Buy Box Explained: What It Is and Why It Decides Everything

You are selling on Amazon, but your products barely move. You have competitive prices, decent reviews - yet nobody seems to buy from you. The reason is almost certainly the Buy Box. It is the single most important mechanism on Amazon.

    What Is the Buy Box?

On the right side of an Amazon product page, there is a white box showing the price, shipping details, and two buttons: "Add to Cart" and "Buy Now"**. That is the Buy Box.

Multiple sellers can list the same product (same ASIN). Only one gets the Buy Box at any given moment. Everyone else is hidden behind "Other Sellers on Amazon." Most customers never click that link.

    Why It Decides Everything

82–90% of all Amazon sales go through the Buy Box. On mobile (over 60% of purchases), it is even more dominant.

    The 7 Key Criteria

    1. Price (Total Landed Price)

Amazon looks at product price + shipping. You do not need to be cheapest, but you cannot be significantly above competition.

    2. Fulfillment Method (FBA vs. FBM)

FBA sellers have a massive advantage. Amazon favours its own logistics. FBM sellers can win but must outperform everywhere else.

    3. Shipping Speed

Faster = better. Prime (1–2 days) is strongly preferred.

    4. Seller Metrics (Account Health)

    • ODR (Order Defect Rate): Below 1%
    • Late Shipment Rate: Below 4%
    • Pre-Fulfillment Cancel Rate: Below 2.5%

    5. Account Age and Sales History

New sellers typically need 2–6 weeks to become Buy Box eligible.

    6. Stock Availability

Zero stock = no Buy Box. Low stock can reduce your share.

    7. Customer Satisfaction

Your seller rating (not product reviews) matters.

    Buy Box Rotation (Timeshare)

Amazon **rotates the Buy Box among qualified sellers with similar conditions. Seller A might get 50%, Seller B 30%, Seller C 20%.

    Buy Box Suppression

Sometimes nobody gets it - when all prices exceed "fair market price" or no seller meets minimum requirements.

Practical Example: 3 Sellers, 1 ASIN

    CriterionSeller ASeller BSeller C
    PriceEUR 34.99EUR 33.49EUR 36.99

Result: Seller A ~60%, Seller B ~30%, Seller C ~10%. The cheapest price does not automatically win - the complete package matters.

    How a Repricer Helps

Beyond 20+ SKUs, manual pricing is impossible. A repricer monitors competitors 24/7, adjusts prices in seconds, and respects your minimums. Strategies go far beyond "be cheapest": Buy Box matching, step repricing, anti-Amazon rules. See our Repricing Strategies Guide.

    FAQ

How quickly can I win the Buy Box as a new seller?

You need a Professional Selling Plan and sufficient sales history. Typically 2–6 weeks to become eligible. FBA sellers qualify faster.

Can I win without a repricer?

With few products and little competition, yes. Against automated competitors, it is extremely difficult.

Does raising my price lose the Buy Box?

Not necessarily. What matters is your price relative to competition. If everyone raises prices, you can too.
