Why Estimate Sales?
The sales volume of a product is the most important metric for your purchasing decision. It answers three fundamental questions:
1. Is it worth buying? If a product sells only 20 units per month and you are one of 8 sellers, you get an average of 2.5 sales per month. At EUR 5 margin per unit, that is EUR 12.50 per month -- not worth it.
2. How much should I order? If you know a product sells 300 units per month and you can realistically capture 20% market share, you need about 60 units for the first month. Without an estimate, you either order too much (storage fees) or too little (missed sales).
3. How aggressive should my repricing be? For a fast-moving product with 1,000 sales per month, you can afford a lower margin per unit because volume carries the total profit. For a slow-moving product, you need higher per-unit margins.

Method 1: BSR-to-Sales Conversion
The Best Sellers Rank (BSR) is the most widely used foundation for sales estimation. Every product on Amazon has a BSR in its main category. The lower the BSR, the more sales. A product with BSR 500 in "Home & Kitchen" sells significantly more than one with BSR 50,000.
The conversion from BSR to sales figures is based on estimation models that approximate the relationship between rank and volume in a category. These models are developed and regularly updated by third-party tools such as Jungle Scout, Helium 10, and Keepa.
For a detailed explanation of BSR, read our BSR guide.
Rough Benchmarks: BSR to Monthly Sales (Amazon.de)
The following values are approximations and fluctuate by season, category, and marketplace. They provide a sense of scale, not exact figures.
| BSR Range | Home & Kitchen | Sports & Outdoors | DIY & Tools | Beauty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 - 100 | 3,000 - 10,000+ | 2,000 - 8,000+ | 1,500 - 5,000+ | 3,000 - 12,000+ |
| 100 - 500 | 800 - 3,000 | 500 - 2,000 | 300 - 1,500 | 1,000 - 3,000 |
| 500 - 2,000 | 200 - 800 | 150 - 500 | 100 - 300 | 300 - 1,000 |
| 2,000 - 10,000 | 50 - 200 | 30 - 150 | 20 - 100 | 80 - 300 |
| 10,000 - 50,000 | 10 - 50 | 5 - 30 | 5 - 20 | 15 - 80 |
| 50,000+ | Under 10 | Under 5 | Under 5 | Under 15 |
Important: These values apply to the main BSR in the top-level category. BSR in subcategories is not directly comparable.

Method 2: Keepa Sales Rank Graph
Keepa is a browser extension and website that tracks the price history and BSR history of Amazon products. The BSR graph shows you not just the current rank but how it has changed over weeks and months.
How to use Keepa for sales estimation:
Each downward spike in the BSR graph indicates a sale (or a cluster of sales). The rank drops because a sale occurred. Count the downward spikes in a 30-day window, and you have a rough estimate of monthly sales.
This method is particularly useful for low-volume products (BSR above 50,000), where BSR-to-sales tables become inaccurate. For fast-moving products with BSR below 1,000, the spikes are so frequent they merge and cannot be counted individually.
Keepa also offers its own sales estimation feature in the Premium plan, which automates the spike analysis.

Method 3: Jungle Scout Estimator
The Jungle Scout Sales Estimator is the best-known tool for sales estimation. You enter the category and BSR, and Jungle Scout displays the estimated monthly sales.
Jungle Scout uses a proprietary data model based on real sales data collected through their own products and partnerships. According to Jungle Scout, accuracy is approximately 70 to 80% -- meaning actual sales fall within +/- 20 to 30% of the estimate in most cases.
The Estimator is also available as a free web version and works well for a quick initial check.
For a comparison of Jungle Scout, Helium 10, and Keepa, see our tool comparison.

Method 4: Helium 10 X-Ray
Helium 10 X-Ray is a Chrome extension that displays sales data directly on the Amazon search results page. When you run a search on Amazon and activate X-Ray, you see for each product on the page: estimated monthly revenue, estimated monthly sales, BSR, price, reviews, and more.
The advantage of X-Ray over the Jungle Scout Estimator is that you see data for an entire search results page at a glance. This allows you to evaluate the entire niche -- not just a single product.
Helium 10 offers a free version with a limited number of queries per day, sufficient for initial research.

Limitations of Sales Estimation
Sales estimation delivers approximations, not exact figures. Several factors limit accuracy.
Seasonal fluctuations
A BSR in December says little about sales in February. Christmas products have a BSR in Q4 that is 5 to 10 times lower than during the rest of the year. Look at the BSR trend over at least 3 months before making a purchasing decision.
New products
A new product without reviews and without sales history has an unstable BSR. Initial sales push the BSR up sharply (= lower rank), but once the initial momentum fades, it drops back. Do not trust the BSR of a new product until it has been live for 30 to 60 days.
Niche products
In small niches with few competitors, BSR can fluctuate dramatically. A single sale can shift the rank by thousands of positions. In these cases, the Keepa spike method is more reliable than BSR-to-sales tables.
Multiple sellers on one listing
The BSR applies to the entire listing, not to an individual seller. If 5 sellers offer the same product and the BSR indicates 1,000 sales per month, you do not get 1,000 sales -- you get the share that corresponds to your Buy Box percentage.
Differences between marketplaces
BSR-to-sales values for Amazon.com do not apply to Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, or Amazon.it. Category sizes differ significantly. A BSR of 5,000 in "Kitchen" on Amazon.com might mean 300 sales, while the same BSR on Amazon.de might mean only 50.

Sales Estimation and Repricing: Calculating Expected Profit
This is where sales estimation becomes strategic. When you know the estimated monthly sales of a product, you can calculate your expected profit and use it to set your repricing minimum price.
The formula:
Estimated monthly sales x your expected Buy Box share x margin per unit = expected monthly profit
Example:
- Estimated listing sales: 400 per month
- Number of sellers: 4 (including you)
- Your expected Buy Box share: 25% = 100 sales
- Selling price: EUR 24.99
- Amazon fees: EUR 8.50
- Cost of goods: EUR 10.00
- Margin per unit: EUR 6.49
- Expected monthly profit: 100 x 6.49 = EUR 649
If you lower your min-price to EUR 22.99, margin per unit drops to EUR 4.49 -- but your Buy Box share might increase to 40% (160 sales):
- Expected monthly profit: 160 x 4.49 = EUR 718.40
The more aggressive pricing strategy yields higher total profit despite a lower per-unit margin. This is exactly the calculation your repricing minimum price should reflect.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which tool is the most accurate?
No tool is exact. Jungle Scout and Helium 10 fall within +/- 20 to 30% of actual sales in most cases. For the most reliable results, use multiple tools and calculate an average. Keepa is particularly valuable for tracking trends over time, while Jungle Scout and Helium 10 provide better snapshots.
Can I estimate sales for free?
Yes. The Jungle Scout Sales Estimator is available as a free web tool. Helium 10 offers a free Chrome extension with limited daily queries. Keepa has a free basic version without sales estimation, but the BSR graph is visible and allows manual spike counting.
How often should I check sales figures?
Before every major purchase. Additionally, we recommend a monthly review of your existing products to detect demand changes early. Seasonal products should be monitored weekly, especially in the weeks before and after seasonal peaks.
Does repricing affect BSR?
Yes. When your repricer lowers the price and you generate more sales as a result, your BSR drops (= better rank). Conversely, BSR rises when you increase the price and sell less. BSR responds to sales in real time and is therefore a direct indicator of your current sales velocity.
